BreinBrigade

Together, we make volunteering possible. At the BreinBrigade, we bring people and organisations together. We help people with memory problems or dementia to continue volunteering. We also support organisations that wish to provide a welcoming environment for volunteers. Everyone has talent. Even when things get more difficult. By working together, we ensure that people can remain active and continue to feel useful.

Are you, or do you know someone, experiencing memory problems? If so, please read on.

How BreinBrigade works

Are you curious about how the process works if you want to volunteer with an organisation in Lelystad via the BreinBrigade? We’ll explain it to you in 8 steps.

1. Sign up

Let us know if you’d like to do voluntary work. You can do this via the registration form or by contacting us.

2. We’ll give you a call

A member of staff from Welzijn Lelystad will contact you. Together, we will arrange an appointment for an introductory meeting.

3. We’d like to get to know you

We’ll talk about what you enjoy, what you’re good at and what sort of voluntary work suits you. We’ll also discuss practical matters, such as days, times and transport.

4. A place for you

We’ll look for volunteer work that matches your wishes and abilities. Have we found something? Then we’ll discuss it with you first.

5. Visiting

You’ll get to know the organisation and receive an explanation of the voluntary work involved. Together, we’ll see if it’s a place where you feel at home.

6. You’re about to get started

8. We work with you to find solutions

If anything changes or if you have any questions, you’re always welcome to get in touch. We’re happy to help you find the right solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do voluntary work if I have memory problems?

Yes, that’s certainly possible. We don’t focus on what someone can no longer do, but on what they can still do and enjoy doing. Together, we look for voluntary work that suits their abilities and interests.

Isn’t volunteering too difficult?

No. Volunteering is tailored to the individual. It can be as little as one hour a week, and the tasks are discussed together.

Can a family member or informal carer attend the introductory meeting?

Yes. A partner, family member, informal carer or support worker is very welcome to attend meetings and introductory sessions.

What if it turns out it’s not right for me after all?

No problem. Volunteering should feel enjoyable. If a role isn’t the right fit, we’ll work together to find another option.

Do I need to have a diagnosis?

No. Even if there is no official diagnosis yet, we can explore the options together.

What sort of voluntary work can I do?

This varies from person to person. Examples include helping with activities, acting as a host or hostess, light maintenance work, gardening, hospitality, cultural activities, club work or administrative tasks.

How much time does volunteering take?

That’s up to you. Some people volunteer for one hour a week, others for half a day or several half-days.

Matching volunteers with organisations

How does BreinBrigade work?

BreinBrigade connects people with memory problems with organisations looking to provide opportunities for voluntary work. Together, we look for activities that suit a person’s talents, interests and abilities.

This creates a valuable partnership for both the volunteer and the organisation. Volunteers remain active and engaged, whilst organisations can count on a motivated volunteer. We guide the entire process, from the initial introduction to the final evaluation.
